The tinplate that we use for all our tin containers is a sheet of steel coated with a thin layer of tin to impede rusting. These tins can be recycled infinitely with no loss of quality. Aside from repurposing your tins as decorations, storage containers, or another creative epicycle idea, tins can also be recycled as raw metal.

Recovered steel can be re-melted and used over and over to produce new products. For every ton of steel recycled, 120 pounds of limestone, 1400 pounds of coal, and 2,500 pounds of iron ore are conserved. Further, recycling steel saves nearly 74% of the energy used to produce it from raw materials — that’s enough energy to power about 18 million homes for a full year! Roughly 66% of all tinplate is manufactured using recycled steel.
